Description

In reverse painting on glass, the image is painted on the back –foreground details first (in reverse to normal practice). In the 18th century, Chinese painters, particularly in Canton, specialized in this technique. One such artist copied these two scenes for Van Braam Houckgeest after the work of the renowned French painter François Boucher. They are still in their original 18th-century frames.; Bij een achterglasschildering wordt de voorstelling op de achterkant aangebracht, waarbij de voorste details eerst moeten worden geschilderd. Deze techniek was in de 18de eeuw een specialiteit van Chinese schilders, met name in Kanton. Een van hen kopieerde voor Van Braam Houckgeest deze twee scènes naar het werk van de beroemde Franse schilder François Boucher. De schilderingen hebben nog hun oorspronkelijke, 18de-eeuwse lijsten.
