The regentesses Clara Abba, Elisabeth van Duynen, and Agatha Munter administered Amsterdam’s leper house, a charitable institution. Bol portrayed them at a table with a cash book, an inkwell, and coins, suggesting their involvement in record keeping and financial management. They likely oversaw staff, handled purchasing goods, and effected various other tasks for the institution.
