A Chinese merchant in Batavia (present-day Jakarta on Java, Indonesia) offers a wide variety of fruit in his stall. He sells rambutan, mangosteen, durian, copra, mango, grapefruit, pineapple and banana. A woman buys betel nuts for chewing wrapped in a sirih (betel) leaf. The large Chinese community played an important role in Batavia. Chinese were primarily active as merchants and craftsmen.
