The Amsterdam Town Hall (now the Royal Palace) on Dam Square counts as the most important historical and cultural monument of the 17th century in the Netherlands. The building symbolizes the tremendous growth and development the city experienced during that time. Gerrit Berckheyde here portrayed the Town Hall in all its glory while simultaneously conveying the hustle and bustle of the city’s main square.
