Description

The man sits sideways, with his arm resting on the back of his chair. It seems as if he has just turned around to look at an unexpected visitor. His right hand only just fits within the picture plane. The execution is free and loose, with individual brushstrokes clearly visible. It is an unusually informal portrait for the time.; De man zit scheef op zijn stoel, zijn arm rust op de rugleuning. Het is alsof hij zich zojuist met een ruk heeft omgedraaid om een onverwachte bezoeker beter te kunnen zien. Zijn rechterhand past nog maar net op het doek. De schilderstijl is vrij en losjes; de verfstreken zijn afzonderlijk te zien. Het is een – voor die tijd – ongewoon informeel portret.
