To commemorate the marriage, the Joubert family commissioned the young artist François-Xavier Fabre to make this portrait and its \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/art\/collection\/objects\/681\/francois-xavier-fabre-portrait-of-laurent-nicolas-de-joubert-french-1787\/\"\u003ependant\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSeated on a garden chair, Madame Joubert slightly inclines her head and gazes at the viewer under half-lidded eyes. In her hair she wears a wreath made of myrtle, which is sacred to Venus, the goddess of love. A golden sash ties underneath the white bodice of her purple silk dress, and her loosely curling hair falls casually down alongside her shoulders and arms. Her elegant hands are folded across her lap.
