The complex patterning, elaborate materials, and long flowing lines of the robes of the Madonna and Christ characterize the \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1226, event);\"\u003eInternational Gothic\u003c\/span\u003e style.  \u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e Gentile was commissioned to paint this scene for his native town, Fabriano, when he was at the height of his fame. The gold-encrusted panel functioned as a processional standard held aloft in parades that honored the \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1712, event);\"\u003eVirgin Mary\u003c\/span\u003e. The panel originally depicted \u003ci\u003e The Stigmatization of \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1664, event);\"\u003eSaint Francis\u003c\/span\u003e \u003c\/i\u003e on the reverse.
