In the 1700s, small birds played an important symbolic role in courtship ritual: the gift of a caged bird from a man to a woman signified her capture of his heart. Posed in front of the ruins of the Temple of Vesta, young aristocratic women dressed in exquisite finery play with small birds; some tether them with strings while others daintily hold them on their fingers. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003ci\u003eThe Bird Catchers\u003c\/i\u003e and its \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 611, event);\"\u003ependant\u003c\/span\u003e, \u003ci\u003eThe Fountain of Love\u003c\/i\u003e, were finished \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 918, event);\"\u003ecartoons\u003c\/span\u003e or models for a series of tapestries known as the \u003ci\u003eNoble Pastorales\u003c\/i\u003e. Eventually, the cartoons were cut up into sections and sold separately.
