Here, earth is represented by the goddess \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 436, event);\"\u003eCeres\u003c\/span\u003e, who is surrounded with a \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 517, event);\"\u003esatyr\u003c\/span\u003e, \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1246, event);\"\u003eputti\u003c\/span\u003e, and a figure holding a sheaf of wheat. Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, was worshiped over a large part of ancient Italy. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Together Jan Brueghel the Younger and Van Balen often painted the four elements, which had also been part of the repertoire of Brueghel the Younger's father, Jan Brueghel the Elder. Brueghel the Elder taught his son the lush, decorative, yet highly detailed landscape and still-life style seen in this painting. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Van Balen, one of Brueghel the Younger's most consistent collaborators, was known for his attractive nudes.
