To the left, an elderly doge kneels between Saints Mark and Francis. \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1675, event);\"\u003eSaint Mark\u003c\/span\u003e, the \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1642, event);\"\u003epatron saint\u003c\/span\u003e of Venice, is accompanied by his identifying \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1552, event);\"\u003eattribute\u003c\/span\u003e, the lion, also a symbol of the city.  Behind the figures, beneath a dramatic sky, sailing ships move across a hazy cityscape. \u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e Schiavone's sheet is a highly finished compositional study for a painting formerly in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, but destroyed by a fire in 1574. Francesco Donato, the \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 728, event);\"\u003edoge\u003c\/span\u003e depicted in the drawing commissioned the painting. Inspired by a painting by Titian, Schiavone used the staircase to develop a dynamic diagonal flow of action. The strong verticals of the canopy and architecture behind the figures balance the \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 556, event);\"\u003ecomposition\u003c\/span\u003e.
