He combined arches, pedestals, columns, bridges, and sculptures in an imaginative reconstruction of monumental and complex \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(26, 1368, event);\"\u003eclassical\u003c\/span\u003e architecture. Piranesi took a creative approach when he made architectural fantasies like this one, using \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(26, 1345, event);\"\u003eantique\u003c\/span\u003e ruins as his point of departure. On this process he wrote:  \u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e  \u003ci\u003e These speaking ruins have filled my spirit with images that accurate drawings, even such as those of the immortal Palladio, could never have succeeded in conveying, though I always kept them before my eyes. \u003cbr\u003e \u003c\/i\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Piranesi first drew the main outlines of the architecture in chalk, then added brown and red \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(26, 1545, event);\"\u003ewash\u003c\/span\u003e for shading and details. Small figures in boats are indicated with broad strokes of wash. Varying tones of wash and rapid, squiggly lines evoke atmospheric conditions.
