Although the man's identity is unknown, scholars believe that the drawing might have been made as a study for an \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1547, event);\"\u003eapostle\u003c\/span\u003e who kneels in front of the \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1712, event);\"\u003eVirgin Mary\u003c\/span\u003e in an \u003ci\u003e \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1704, event);\"\u003eAssumption of the Virgin\u003c\/span\u003e \u003c\/i\u003e painting. In this large-scale drawing, Jacob Jordaens concentrated on the flowing drapery that covers the man's body from his neck to ankles, showing the way the light reflected off the folds in the fabric. Jordaens applied the black chalk energetically, describing the outline of the drapery with a thick, strong line. Various layers of colored \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 1241, event);\"\u003epigments\u003c\/span\u003e then added shadows to the fabric. He finished the work with an application of a thick coat of massicot bodycolor to \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(84, 368, event);\"\u003ehighlight\u003c\/span\u003e the cloak and violet wash to articulate the strip of lining visible behind the figure's left hand.
