Although the groupings seem casual, Cézanne is known to have taken great care with the arrangement, sometimes spending hours positioning the objects. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In this brightly colored watercolor, Cézanne's monumental conception of form is evident: the jug, the two pots, one white, one blue, and the seven apples assume a physical presence beyond normal perception of their existence. Using small patches of color laid next to one another, Cézanne evoked the plasticity of substance, building form rather like bricks build structures. His fresh and vigorous brushstrokes are visible against the background wall as areas of greens and blues are juxtaposed. The apples are described with red arcs around the perimeter, then yellow brushstrokes next to the red; the empty middle suggests light reflecting off the surface. The baby here has curly hair and open eyes that suggest a liveliness absent in the finished work. \u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e The upper left corner of the sheet's verso contains a study for the Virgin's head. She appears with her head tilted downward, as in the painting, but she wears a veil that Parmigianino later discarded. Next to her is a woman in profile who does not appear in the painting. He chose a flat-bottomed vessel not unlike the gondolas that still ply the waters of his native city. The energetically applied washes and the action of the boatman about to push off from the bank convey a sense of urgency. The Getty Museum's painting repeats a larger composition that Bouguereau made for the Paris \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(26, 1259, event);\"\u003eSalon\u003c\/span\u003e in 1880; a viewer probably saw the larger version there and requested a smaller one for private viewing.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Bouguereau placed his mythological fantasy in an idyllic, Arcadian landscape. His exercises in different painting techniques are seen in the way he softened the outlines of forms and the manner in which he explored the descriptive possibilities of brushstrokes: broad and flat in the tablecloth, sketchy in the apples, and short and dense in the flower petals. Monet's technique is also apparent in the use of light to animate the surfaces of the flowers, fruit, and tablecloth, and in the way the colors are affected by the light, by reflections, and by each other. The color blue conveys the mysticism and melancholy of the landscape, which seems full of premonitions. An abstract mound at the right represents a clump of trees; a white fence runs diagonally in front. The vaguely defined shape on the fence may be a shadow of two lovers, a recurring theme in Munch's work. He used an undulating line to depict the shoreline that continues into the trees at the right. Stars reflect in the water, and a flash of light in the trees shines brightly. \u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e Varying thicknesses of blue and green paint are blended together to form the impression of a night sky. Up close, however, one can appreciate how this pointillist surface is built up of precise groupings of varying blues and greens, with highlights created by the tiny dots of yellow and of white paper showing through. \u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e The palette of this particular work has several striking elements. For example, the choice of orange for the water and clouds creates a sense of excitement in what might otherwise be a purely languorous, even pretty scene. \u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e The present sheet is closely related to a painting depicting the same view of the Marne, dated 1888 and currently in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. Her counterpart, depicted horizontally in the lower portion of the sheet, turns downwards and inwards, apparently adjusting her bodice or sash. Strokes of white chalk indicate light streaming in from an unseen source behind the first dancer and before the second; two inscriptions near the bottom edge of the sheet read “très reflété”: a note from the artist to himself indicating strong reflected light. Degas used brilliant green, pink, and blue papers to work out individual figures for several of his ballet paintings from the early 1870s, tracing the contours and shadows in black chalk or thinned oil paint, using the colored paper to fill in the middle tones, and adding a few touches of white to suggest the reflective surfaces of satin and skin.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe principal figure on this sheet is squared for transfer; both she and her companion appear in a painting known as The Rehearsal, today in the Harvard Art Museums: there the dancing girl wears a crown of pale blue flowers and appears to the left of center, while the girl turned away figures in the background, her head apparently bowed in conference with another dancer. Other preparatory studies for this picture are today in the Morgan Library and the Norton Simon Museum.The Harvard painting reveals the light source all three drawings share to have been a row of high windows looking onto a leafy courtyard from the main rehearsal room at the old Paris opera house in the rue Le Peletier. This clearly identifiable location suggests that the Harvard picture (and, hence, the proposed sheet) can probably be dated to no later than 1873; the old opera house burned to the ground in October of that year. Degas, however, kept this drawing in his studio, recycling its figures again and again. In the foreground, a female cowherd waits patiently for her charge to take a drink. A bare tree, studied from nature and silhouetted against the sky at left, contributes to the sense of quiet melancholy that pervades the composition. Laid in with graphite, the design is firmed up with black chalk contours and shadows and threaded through with long, parallel strokes of pastel, powerfully reminiscent of the skeins of oil paint we find in Segantini’s pictures of the same moment. The effect is at once muted and spectacular, suggesting both the hushed atmosphere of the valley at dusk and the awesome scale of the mountains.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis drawing combines all the elements that distinguish Segantini’s best mature work: an Alpine landscape rendered precisely and at monumental scale; a peasant protagonist treated with quiet reverence; and a fine graphic sense, with color applied in parallel strokes. He was famous for painting his monumental oil landscapes outdoors, directly from nature and without preparatory drawings, but this pastel was indeed a preparation and not, like many of his earlier drawings, a ricordo of a finished picture; it differs in various ways, as discussed below, from the painting with which it is associated. Segantini probably made the pastel in situ, outdoors, in 1897 and later used it as a study for the left-hand canvas in his final masterpiece: the Alpine Triptych, a work commissioned for the Swiss pavilion of the 1900 World’s Fair and left unfinished upon his untimely death in the fall of 1899. The triptych to which the painting belongs, today in the Segantini Museum at Saint-Moritz, was meant to comprise twelve individual compositions: the three main panels portraying Life (La Vita), Nature (La Natura), and Death (La Mort), plus three allegorical lunettes and six smaller medallions representing, among other subjects, the Alpine rose and the Edelweiss blossom. Each of the principal panels presents a specific view; La Vita shows the soaring Sciora Massif and Bondasca Glacier from a vantage point near the town of Soglio. The pastel features this same view, crisply silhouetted against a pale sky. The painted composition substitutes for the pastel’s cowherd a mother and child, nestled at the foot of the tree, and multiplies the single cow to a small herd, but the standing figure does not seem to have been part of the original composition of the pastel either: she was plainly laid in with vertical black strokes on top of the horizontal green lines that describe the meadow. Segantini may have added her at the moment when he dedicated the pastel to Tobias (Toby) E. Rosenthal (1848-1917), an American artist based in Munich who acted as an agent for Segantini’s second most important commission Spring in the Alps, a very large landscape painted in oils for the San Francisco collector Jacob Stern between 1896 and 1898. Although born wealthy, he zealously supported the poor and participated in a revolution against tyrannical leadership but refused an invitation to become king.  \u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e French engraver René Boyvin used this drawing as the basis for his print of Empedocles. The outlines show that Boyvin traced it with a stylus for transfer; the resulting printed image is a reverse of the drawing. Another artist copied Boyvin's print for an engraving of Saint Roch in 1563.
